Learn techniques for successful pastel painting. Work with an instructor experienced in the use of pastels to depict portraits, still lifes, and/or figure studies.
Instruction will consist of (1) selection of materials to use for successful pastel paintings, (2) demonstrations of various techniques to use with pastels, (3) arrangement of objects for still life subjects, (4) importance of use of light to define form, (5) students may work from a still life supplied by the instructor OR from a still life they supply. The instructor will work with each student individually in their area of need. If there’s enough student interest, we will use one class to work with a live model.
Supply list:
Students are responsible for materials appropriate for pastel. The instructor will demonstrate the use of materials in class.

Kneaded eraser, terry cloth towel, tortillons, paper stumps, drawing board, bulldog clips to fasten pastel papers to board.
Pastel papers or pastel pad. You can purchase individual sheets of pastel paper; you want paper with tooth to grip the chalks. Colored paper is preferred to white papers. Try using warm and cool tones and learn how the color background can affect the mood of the painting. You may want to experiment with sanded pastel papers.
