Day 1:

You’ll discover the joy of portrait painting and overcome your “fear of faces.”
Learn to create an accurate representation of a portrait model. Instruction will consist of (1) demonstrations of portrait drawing in various mediums – oil, pastel, graphite, etc.; (2) history of portrait and backgrounds used in portrait painting; (3) lighting techniques for portraits; (4) importance of the use of value to render 3-dimensional form; and (5) individual, hands-on lessons in the application of paint.

Pack a lunch for a half-hour lunch break.

Day 2:

Focus will be on drawing the human figure, applying concepts of contour, shading, perspective, foreshortening, and negative space. The morning session will consist of Gesture drawing, with 2, and 5, minute poses to begin, followed by 10- and 20-minute poses. The afternoon will offer 2 hour long poses for more detailed drawings.

Class will use graphite or charcoal for gesture poses in the morning and can work in the medium of their choice in the afternoon. Mary will demonstrate drawing and toning techniques and provide individual help for each student.  The class will meet at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel and there is a refrigerator for bag lunches.  Please see the supply list link.
