Playful Discoveries with Acrylics
Instructor: Sissi Janku

A painting of white egrets and palm trees.

February 5 @ 10:00 am - February 6 @ 2:00 pm

  • This event has passed.

This workshop is designed for islanders and visitors alike who are ready to bring joyful art and sunshine into their lives. After the hurricane took some of the beauty away from this island, Sissi Janku will brighten your hearts and homes with a new FUN look at Florida’s tropical landscape.

Join her on a magical trip. Bring your canvas and paints to rediscover the plants and wildlife of this Island from a new angle. Journey into a mix of abstraction and realism, a hint of childlike joy, and a harmonious play of bright colors with a sneaky dash of warmth and heartfelt simplicity.

“The seed holds a very great secret – it never gets old. It is the eternal yes to life.”  Anat Vaughn-Lee

Painting classes include step-by-step instructions with tips for:

  • careful observation of the angle of the sunlight in the painting and shadows (even underwater, turtles have filtered light on them)
  • complimentary colors
  • color-mixing
  • application of paints in different styles and techniques: watercolor style, opaque impressionistic style, pointillism, and all the many ways acrylic paints can be used and worked with
  • techniques for effects: dripping, scratching, bleeding

Supply list:

Acrylic Paint

If you have painted with acrylics before, bring your acrylic paints.

For beginners I recommend “craftsmart” from Michaels. They are budget friendly and come in a 16-color value set. Some “craft acrylics” are not as lightfast as professional artist paints. You can use a non-yellowing varnish like “mod podge” or “polyacrylic” to make your artwork lightfast after it is thoroughly dry.

Brushes

  • A mixture of sizes, at least three or four brushes ranging from 3/16 to 1″ in width.
  • Instructor will bring extra for everyone.
  • 1 black sharpie
  • 1 pink eraser

Canvases

  • 2 canvases size 16×20″
  • 2 canvases 11×14″ or 12×16″
